Poland

Poland is an eastern European nation bordered by Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939 which started the Second World War and many Poles suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Germany built many concentration camps where millions of Jews were tortured and killed. Some of these camps have been preserved and can now be visited.   In the towns and cities there is beautiful medieval architecture and cobbled streets, castles and cathedrals.  Outside the towns there are mountainous areas and lakes. Poland is a religious (mainly catholic) nation and in 1978 the first Polish pope was elected - the Cardinal of Krakow.  Poland joined the European Union in 2004.  Polish cuisine includes hearty stews and goulash, as well as pancakes and dumplings.

The Polish flag consists of two horizontal stripes of white at the top and red at the bottom. Red and white are the national colours.
